When Japan Meets Scandinavia in Zagreb

Have you heard of Japandi?

If you haven’t yet, don’t worry – this minimalist blend of Japanese and Scandinavian aesthetics has only taken the design world by storm over the past decade. Japandi is all about clean lines, neutral colors, and a focus on natural materials.

Although there’s no single creator of this style, some examples of its application are certainly worth mentioning: the Kinfolk Gallery in Copenhagen, known for its Scandinavian minimalism; Hotel K5 in Tokyo, which incorporates Japanese details; and Noma, a restaurant that celebrates a fusion of functionality and natural elements. Numerous design houses in Los Angeles have also embraced the Japandi aesthetic.

But how does it look when Japan and Scandinavia meet in a 54 m² apartment in Zagreb? The magazine Living recently featured just such an example. This project was brought to life through a collaboration between architects Brankica and Aida from the studio Dizajn et cetera and the apartment’s owner, who, as the article mentions, poured her heart and soul into the space.

The Simplicity and Functionality of Japandi with the Retro Charm of Mid-Century Style

This eclectic approach is more than just a combination of Japanese and Scandinavian styles – it also includes an element of Mid-Century Modern. Born as a design movement after World War II, Mid-Century style is recognized for its clean lines, simple shapes, and iconic furniture pieces.

Where Do We See Japandi and Mid-Century Modern in This Apartment?

Japandi style dominates through neutral tones, natural materials like wood, the presence of plants, minimalist decor, and functional furniture. The space feels calm and purified, which are the key characteristics of Japandi.

Mid-Century elements, such as the pendant lamp and the shape of the chairs, add subtle accents and a retro aesthetic without disrupting the overall Japandi atmosphere. Geometric shapes and details bring a gentle touch of Mid-Century Modern, yet they don’t overpower the space.

Consider Japandi for Your Home

Japandi with Mid-Century accents can bring harmony, functionality, and timeless beauty to any space. Perhaps this is the inspiration you’ve been waiting for for your own home?
